Ruth Anderson 100k/50mile 2007
Here is the good news:
I won the Ruth Anderson 50 Mile in a pretty good time of 5.56.11
The bad news:
I did not make it all the way through the 100k (63miles).
Here are the details:
The course was more hilly then I was expecting it, it was not really hilly but very rolling. The bike path had a 1000 distractions since it is not closed to the general public. I do not remember how many times I had to swerve around people jogging, walking, walking the dogs, riding bikes etc. and believe me it was a busy beautiful Saturday morning.
I went out right on schedule, around 7.10/mile for the first 5-6 miles then picked up the pace to 6.55 / 7min/mile pace. I felt pretty good, eat my GU (total of 20), drank and just kept on cruising. At 50k (31miles) I had 3.37.11 right on time. Still feeling good. This lasted for around another 20k (13 miles). Then I started to crash (some of you warned me about it and you where right). I know many of you experienced ultra guys have told me about salt tablets and maybe that would help, but I really started to fade fast from 7 to 7.20 to 8 to 8.20. I almost threw up twice trying to pick it up. And got close to having to walk - there was no way back out of this hole. So I decided to stop at the 50mile mark and get counted as official finisher in that race instead of continuing for 13 more miles. I was just really at the end.
Not sure why, I think I really need to work on my intake, succeed caps, more drinks not sure I have to think about this. I still ended up with a good 50mile time instead of a bad 100k time. Maybe my goals where just set to high. I sure gained another good experience in ultra running and that's what you really need to be good at it - experience and figuring out what works.
Thanks to everyone for you support in e-mails etc. Special thanks to Valerie and Dylan for coming up there to cheer me on. And a very big thank you to Scott Peterson for being my road crew and Linda for really going out of your way to be there. Thank you.
